MMULT Formula Syntax
Example Use Case
Multiplying two matrices for transformations or data analysis
Understanding the MMULT Formula
The MMULT function in Excel performs matrix multiplication on two arrays, a fundamental operation in linear algebra. It’s used for transformations, statistical computations, or combining datasets—think graphics rotations or regression analysis.
For a 2x2 matrix [[1, 2], [3, 4]] times [[5, 6], [7, 8]], MMULT returns a 2x2 result (array formula required in older Excel). The column count of the first must match the row count of the second, ensuring compatibility.
Why Use MMULT?
MMULT powers matrix math—essential for engineering, machine learning, or financial modeling. It automates multiplication, delivering results for complex operations without manual steps, ideal for multidimensional data crunching.
Example with Sample Data
Matrices | Formula | Result |
---|---|---|
[[1, 2], [3, 4]] × [[5, 6], [7, 8]] | =MMULT(A1:B2, C1:D2) | [[19, 22], [43, 50]] |
[[2, 0], [0, 2]] × [[1, 1], [1, 1]] | =MMULT(A1:B2, C1:D2) | [[2, 2], [2, 2]] |
[[1, 2]] × [[3], [4]] | =MMULT(A1:B1, C1:C2) | [[11]] |
MMULT merges matrices: [[1, 2], [3, 4]] × [[5, 6], [7, 8]] yields [[19, 22], [43, 50]]. It’s a matrix multiplier.
